How to change your mindset from 'lacking' to abundant

Updated: Jul 5, 2021

How often do you find yourself feeling you don’t have ‘enough’? Maybe even wishing you had more or feeling envious over someone else’s life.

The quote “comparison is the thief of joy” is the most accurate few words.

I had this scarce mindset, that I didn’t have enough, everything was happening too me and that my life just wasn’t enough.

Social media doesn’t help. We have the constant stream of curated and edited photos which have been chosen from hundreds to display the perfect, flawless and ideal life.

So how can you feel satisfied, fulfilled and content with your life? You change your mindset.

Ruby how do I change my mindset? Well, the answer… gratitude.

When was the last time you actively gave thanks and expressed gratitude for all you HAVE compared to complaining about the lack of what you believe you don’t have?

A simple way to incorporate gratitude into your life is making it a habit, a ritual of your day.

I like to do it before I touch my phone in the morning and as I lay in my bed at night.

Example: “I am so grateful that I woke up this morning free of chronic pain and illness, and that I know when I walk into the bathroom, I’ll have running water, and food will be in the kitchen”

“I am grateful for my job because it allows me to put food on the table, go to coffee with friends and save for my future”

“I am grateful for my friends who continuously look out for me”

Once you’ve began establishing this habit, and you get better at it, you will find yourself giving thanks throughout the day. Such as when someone lets you merge into the lane in peak hour traffic, you will say “I am so grateful for that person letting me in as it would have caused me to cause a traffic jam otherwise”

Or when you find a car spot outside of the café.

I realised a few years ago that no matter what you believe will make your life better, whether it’s a flat stomach, new car, bigger apartment or more money. None of it will actually satisfy you long term.

You will not find joy or fulfilment in a yacht if you can’t find it in a cup of coffee.

It’s all about appreciating what you have while working towards what you want. Not wishing you had something different.

Life is so unpredictable, and ever changing. We’ve seen that this year. You don’t know what tomorrow could bring, the changes and impact it could have to this “mediocre” life you believe you live. Tomorrow it could disappear, so give thanks for what you have.
